The Board of Education values the importance of student leadership and the contribution our students make to the learning process. The Board is committed to inviting students to join the board for the year. Two Student Trustees are invited to represent each high school in our district.
What is a Student Trustee? A Student Trustee serves as a representative of the student body, working closely with the school board to bring a student perspective to key issues. As a vital link between students and school board leadership, you will ensure that student voices are heard and taken into account in shaping policies and initiatives that affect schools.
Responsibilities of a Student Trustee
- Advocacy: Represent the interests and concerns of your fellow students at school board meetings.
- Leadership: Act as a leader and role model within your school and community.
- Communication: Maintain open lines of communication between students and the school board by regularly engaging with your peers to gather feedback and share information.
- Decision-Making: Participate in discussions on key educational policies, programs, and services, offering a student’s perspective.
- Collaboration: Work closely with school administrators, trustees, and other student leaders to ensure student voices are reflected in decisions.
What to Expect as a Student Trustee
- Board Meetings: You will attend school board meetings where you’ll contribute to discussions, share student feedback, and provide insight into issues affecting students.
- Leadership Development: This role provides you with valuable leadership experience, opportunities to enhance your communication skills, and a platform to influence change.
- Networking: You will work alongside school board trustees, administrators, and fellow student leaders, giving you the chance to build connections and learn from educational leaders.
- Support: While you will be stepping into a leadership role, guidance and support will be provided throughout your term to help you navigate your responsibilities.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a current student enrolled in North Island Secondary School, Port Hardy Secondary School or Eke Me-Xi Learning Centre.
- Passionate about student issues and interested in leadership and advocacy.
- Willing to commit time to attend board meetings and engage with students regularly.
Travel Requirements
- Board meeting locations rotate between the South and North Zones, requiring travel between different areas. See Board Meeting Schedule for dates and locations.
- In accordance with Policy 3-60 – Travel Expenses, Student Trustees may claim mileage (KM) reimbursement for travel outside their community to attend board meetings.
