About Feeding Futures:

The Ministry is allocating $71.5 million per year in dedicated, multi-year funding to school districts around the province to increase food security by expanding or creating school food programs.

Feeding Futures programs address the immediate need of feeding students, and builds on the progress made with the Student and Family Affordability Fund to help reduce the rising food costs for families who need it most.

Why A School Food Program?

The BC Coalition for Healthy Schools describes the impact that School Meal Programs can have on learner wellbeing, such as reductions in behavioral and emotional problems, reductions in bullying, aggression, anxiety and depression.

School Meal Programs can also increase the consumption of fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods, and studies have shown that School Meal Programs can reduce non-communicable diseases such as stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Recently, the Canadian government released their National School Food Policy, which highlights the background and benefits of School Food Programs.

Here Dr. Ruetz also highlights the Economic Rationale for Investing in School Meal Programs which benefit students, families and communities.
