Employment Equity

Port Hardy - The president of the Vancouver Island North Teachers’ Association (VINTA), Fred Robertson, and School District No85 Superintendent, Scott Benwell, sign a letter to be sent to universities in the province that encourages them to consider the north island as an ideal area to host teacher training for aspiring educators with Aboriginal ancestry.  The letter comes as part of the cooperation between the district and the teachers’ association in developing an Employment Equity agreement.  Approximately 45% of students in School District No. 85 (Vancouver Island North) self-identify as Aboriginal and yet only about 5% of SD85 teachers self-identify as Aboriginal.  It is hoped that both an Employment Equity agreement and local teacher training opportunities will go a long way to addressing the need for more Aboriginal teachers in district.

From Echo Bay to AJ Elliott: A Lego Journey

Remember the feeling when you were reunited with that toy that had been missing since who knows when? The smile on these J.A.Elliott students' faces brings us back to those important moments! When our Secretary-Treasurer visited A.J. Elliott earlier in the year, he was questioned about what had happened to the Lego at Echo Bay School. Not knowing the answer but wanting to make it right, Mr. Martin made arrangements for the Lego bin to be located and shipped from Echo Bay to A.J. Elliott. Many hands made this happen and we are thrilled to see the Lego in use once again.
Sometimes it's not the new SMART boards or the latest playground equipment. Sometimes, the bin full of Lego, lost then found, is all it takes to bring a twinkle to our eyes.
Thanks everyone.

Alert Bay Feast

Alert Bay School students hosted chiefs, elders, community members, and special guests at their annual Fall Feast held October 19th.  Guests were treated to traditional dances, songs, and a delicious meal of barbecued salmon and side dishes all prepared by the students for their families.  Alert Bay students were very committed to practicing and planning for the event from the beginning of the school year and their efforts were appreciated by all in attendance.  Gilakas’la to the staff and students of Alert Bay School.
